I made these simple basswood trays (with plywood bottoms) for myself, painted them with milk paint, intending to carve through the milk paint for a high contrast look. This was destined to be one of those projects, the kind that always sit on the sidelines needing to be completed. It never was, and so here they are.
I offer these "As is" sold as a stacking set.
Caveat: The surfaces are untreated milk paint—this means that they will stain very easily. Eventually all the handling and staining will become "patina" and they will look old and cool. Alternatively, a top coat of some kind will prevent that (mostly) from happening and help them retain a fresher look.
Top coats come with tradeoffs:
Oil = darkening the colors significantly.
Paste wax = less darkening, but less protection.
Spray finishes vary. Polyurethane protects well, but it yellows over time.
To keep the things fresh and bright but offer some protection, my choice would be this spray Polycrylic. It goes on easy, dries fast so multiple coats can be built up quickly, and the satin surface it leaves will resist most light staining from handling and mild liquid contact.
One of the trays has a slightly gappy corner (pictured.) So it goes.
