Turned carved, painted, then scraped and sanded to reveal the natural wood color between the painted carving tool marks. These vases are a departure from the norm for me as they were carved with gouges rather than a chip carving knife, as well as a first time painting walnut. I like the way they came out and will probably do more in this vein in the future.

They fall into the category of “studio seconds” because of a small mistake made in production: they each have a tiny hole in the bottom because I bored too deeply for the glass vials (go ahead, make your LOTR jokes about the Dwarves of Moria and the Balrog.) This is of course invisible, unless you turn them over, and they hold their glass vials just as well. They are priced as seconds nonetheless.
