Listing this piece as a “carved stick” is both 100% accurate and, I will admit, kind of funny. But that’s what it is; it is a carved stick. It is unfinished basswood (aka linden, lime or tilia) and I carved it over the course of a few weeks, just doing a little every morning, as sort of a mental palate cleanser before turning my attention to other work.

The ornamentation is all improvised and carved (almost entirely) by eye; I had no overall plan for the design and just let it develop as I went. Later, I decided to hang it on the wall, so I fitted it with a loop of hand woven band (which I wove on a small wooden tape loom).

This stick has no purpose other than to hang there and look pretty—which it does quite well, I think. I have used it once or twice to scratch my back. Works great! Maybe I should have listed it as a back scratcher.
