This premium version of the standard Klötzli #2 knife came about through several months of discussion between myself and the Klötzli team. The idea was deceptively simple: Make a version of the standard Klötzli #2 knife that is expertly sharpened, polished and ready to use directly out of the package.

Our initial discussion was followed by experimentation with the production process in Klötzli’s Burgdorf Switzerland workshop, a couple months of test carving on my part using the initial prototype knife, plus some feedback and refinement. The result is something exceedingly rare in the woodworking world: An affordable tool that comes to you sharp enough to do very fine, high-level work.

The Klötzli family has been making knives since 1846 and have a decades-old relationship with the chip carving community; In the 1950’s Ernst Klötzli and Swiss carver Christian Rubi worked together to develop the design of the now-classic #2 chip carving knife, with its thin, arch-backed blade and straight cutting edge set at a slight angle to the handle. The knife is now virtually synonymous with the Swiss chip carving method, with many companies and makers employing similar designs.

Each Klötzli #2 Extra Fine knife is made in their Burgdorf Switzerland workshop, assembled, sharpened and polished by hand. Klötzli does not use robots or automation; All of their tools are the products of the skilled labor of professional knife makers.
